Optic Blast (from the Past)!

If I hadn’t mentioned it before, it was back in the early 90′s when I started reading comics (thanks, in no part, to future Hubby). And the series that I gravitated the most to was the X-Men.

I’m sure it had to do with the variety of different reasons, including the multitude of characters in the X-Men Universe. But one thing is for sure. And it’s that I loved reading the comic because I loved watching the original X-Men cartoon that aired every Saturday morning on “Fox Kids.”

Oh yes … you remember it. And you so wanna hum the theme song. Well, let me just help you along here:

Okay, so the video (and, let’s face it … the animation) is a bit crappy. But be honest … you’re humming the theme song now. Right? Right?!

Anyway, the reason I’m babbling on (once) again about the X-Men is because I’ve another X-Men sketch to share with you. This particular one was done by our friend, Chris.

When we first started throwing out the challenges, we had hoped that there would be interest in participating with the drawings. And I’ll be honest, I know that Jeremy had been hoping that Chris would join in. And we are certainly glad he did!

Now, I must warn you … part of the reason we moved over the WordPress was so that each artist could write a description of their drawing. Except when I finally got the scanned copy of Chris drawings (thanks to the wonderful scanning skills of Jeremy), there was no write-up. And so, in true Commish form, I did what I did best … I cyberstalked him on Facebook. :-)

But it worked! And so with out further rambling … here is Chrisrendering of our very first challenge, Cyclops.

I don’t like how i did the hair … it’s pretty half ass. I did a side profile action pose [and] I tend to do these a lot. [I'm] trying to learn to plot better.

Things I need to work on: Perspective, plotting, and presentation … although [this is] a sketch, [it] could be a little more refined.

Thanks for sharing with us, Chris! I’m looking forward to seeing more of your work!

    Finally getting around to commenting.

Anyway, I’ll definitely say that your drawing style is distinctly your own. I like the longer torsos you draw on your character. Would love to see you work on more dynamic poses… something moving away from the straight on shots that you have here. I do love the musculature you draw… especially in the chest area.

What I would love to see is more details, though. The belt could use some sort of detailing… and maybe some shading.

Otherwise, great stuff. Looking forward to seeing more.
